Surgical management of oesophageal foreign body using a minimally invasive oesophagotomy technique (MIOT) in an Indian Flap-shell turtle (Lissemys punctata) - a case report

Accidental ingestion of fish hooks is common among turtles. Several techniques are available for retrieving hooks, ranging from simple non-invasive to more complicated and invasive surgical procedures. The purpose this case report document the successful retrieval an oesophageal foreign body (fish hook) using a minimally oesophagotomy technique (MIOT) in Indian Flap-shell turtle (Lissemys punctata). adult male punctata) presented with nylon thread protruding its mouth. dorsoventral radiographs confirmed presence caudal oesophagus, just outside coelomic cavity. After induction general anaesthesia, sterile artificial insemination (AI) sheath was passed intraorally through fishing line until it reached hook. hook then retrieved by making 5 mm incision at point where tip AI felt. oesophagus skin closed routine manner. kept secure captivity 20 days, following which released natural habitat. used reduces size considerably, thereby decreasing possibility postoperative complications.
